Visual Literacy - 2012
This year - 2012 - I have taken a slightly different angle on photography and called the project Visual Literacy. The residents have their own Visual Diaries in which a range of things are added such as drawings, quotes of the day, pictures that tell a story, song writing, visual poems, conversations and other crazy little personal quirks. Below are a few snapshots from some of the Visual Diaries. Gradually we will be combining 'bits of the best' into a ZINE that will be printed and given out to the residents and staff at Common Ground. The original ZINE will be left in the library at ESCG.

From the Words created in Scrabble came a story that will challenge your logic, vocabulary and literacy!
Z -Greek had a bi wife who was a criminal turd who stole his ring from ‘the’ house in Textas Colorado, where the popys grow wildly. Con and Joan-a were MILFing at the Audio Textas Club in Colorado where he and his chums used to hang out on the weekends. He went to jail and for stealing Stag and they released him on bail. Con and Joan ring z- Greek and tell him he’s going to get KO. Z- Greek went to the BIG house the place was a dive but he had street credo and was given asiljar of popys that still had dirt on them. Z-Greek realized that it was his arsey bi wife that should be in jail and not him so he decided to mend the situation. He said, "Ahhhh FOQ –U fowl chicken, we haven’t had sex yet so you can come to this dive and the dirt can be on you....but I’ll take the popys!" Though he thought about his mate who he did envy because he was able to wean himself off the popy juice.

Photo-Based Story - Photograph by Gregory Crewdson
It was between 4 and 5 on a Friday morning when I got into the car it was only when the driver smashed into another car and did not stop and hit the gas and kept going and started driving down the wrong side of the road at top speed it was then I realized that car I was in was stolen the driver I did not know at all. He just kept going faster and faster down the wrong side of the road I knew what I had to do and that was to bail out at the next opportunity but when was this guy slowing down and he didn’t look like he was going to slow down. At the next intersection I was going to get out I made sure my seatbelt was off and my door was unlocked I was getting out at the next intersection no matter what even he didn’t slow down, no matter what I was getting out. The unknown driver did slow down a little so I opened the door and rolled out of the moving smashed stolen car. Fortunately for me I never got a scratch on me, and the unknown car thief was never to be seen again.

I Climbed up a Tree
Every story below starts with the sentence "I climbed a tree." It's amazing where that little journey up can take us!
I climbed up a tree that wasn't there. There was a bear who lived in the tree that I climbed, that wasn't there. On the hill there was a house that wasn't there.
Behind the house that wasn't there, there was a tree that wasn't there to meet the bear that resided in the tree that wasn't there that I climbed.
Work in Progress Story by Jo 18:06:2012
I climbed up a tree. It was alive and it was a palm tree. I got to the top and I could see the whole city. It was day time. I liked to look over the city because it was beautiful. I could see big churches and high rise buildings. I liked the big churches because it's where I pray to God. I stayed up the tree for a long time. I even built a little tree house where I take all my men up to and where I like to sit and think about my life and my kids. I have a TV and a lounge and a small bed in my tree house. I painted my tree house purple. I like to watch the birds fly by they are nice. The tree has beautiful leaves, it's summer the leaves give me shade from the hot sun. I like to lay on the bed by myself with no men and have a coffee and eat some meatloaf I made myself. I drift off to sleep with the sun keeping me warm. I get woken up by the owls hooting at me. They want some beer, like me and captain enjoying a beer. Once they had their beer they went to bed because they were drunk like me and captain. They were black and gold.
I climbed down the tree to get some more beer from the shop. On the way to the shop I saw a man he was very nice because he talked to me nicely. He asked what I was doing. I said I was just going to get beer. I got VB. I went home and it all went down my neck. I like feeling drunk but it also makes me sick and sometimes I do some stupid things - I regret it! But today I just felt calm and collected because Rachel and Melissa were around. I enjoy when they come here because they give their time for us and could be doing other things but they don't.
Story by Cindy 04:06:2012
I climbed up a tree. It was a gum tree, it was in my backyard in Box Hill. I saw the whole world in devastation when I climbed the tree. I saw broken records, deaths eyeball pinned ready to kill us all, It's a good tree because it told me the truth about death. Death knows that they're all useless because they all eat sh__! I stayed up the tree because I am the only one who has done anything about the world coming to an end and that's why I climbed the the tree to meet death at the same height he is. I spoke to him and asked him to jump into my body to check out what I had been doing so that he knew the truth about what I was saying (whether to kill me or not...the last person on earth). So he decided to keep me and the only words he said was, "Keep going."
So I climbed down the tree and proceeded with my life knowing that I was a worker for death.
Story by Fiona 18:06:2012
I use my arms and legs to climb up the tree. It is an apple tree with no apples on it. I'm climbing the tree to see over the fence. Beyond the fence is a garden and in the garden there is growing a tomato plant and peanuts to make peanut butter. I want to check the garden to see if the peanuts are ready. They are ready! I climb over the fence to the pick the tomato and peanuts. Nobody sees me stealing the fruit. I feel guilty so I make a big salad and I take it to my neighbors. "Here is a tomato and peanut salad and I hope you like it. I made it from your garden fruit." They then asked me how I got it and I told them I climbed the fence. "That's good" they say and welcome me in for dinner.

I climbed up a tree; it was a gum tree and it was in the city. I could see the whole city. I liked seeing the city because it was fun watching the people walk past. I stayed in the tree for half an hour. I then climbed down the tree and went for a walk and saw a few motor bikes. They were choppers from down the road. I wanted to ride one but I didn't because I didn't want to. I then went for a walk to MacDonalds to get something to eat.

I climbed up a tree. It was an oak tree that had many leaves on it. There were sparrows that lived in the oak tree. I tried to get one to land on my finger and as I was reaching out to do that the branch broke and I feel 20 ft to the ground. I just missed the rocks and was unconscious for a couple of minutes. The sparrow flew away. I climbed the tree again and this time looked over the fence. I saw the road and cars that were on the corner of my street. I didn't like looking at the cars they annoyed me. They were on a cross road and often the cars didn't stop so they would crash and make noise. I liked sitting in the tree because there was no one around and no one could see me. It was like I was invisible. I liked being invisible because then I wouldn't get into trouble. I wasn't allowed to climb the tree but I did anyhow. I had a favourite spot up in the tree, nearly half way up amongst the big branches. I had a dog called Sasha that stayed at the bottom of the tree. While I was in the tree I liked to just sit and listen to the traffic. I stayed up in the tree for hours until I begin to feel giddy and then I'd go down before I fell. I'd then went inside and got a bite to eat.

Random Play in the Library
Exquisite Corpse Rip Out Style
Glenn, Craig, Melissa, Fiona, Justin, Darryl and I ripped out some body parts from the Yellow Pages and put them together to create an Exquisite Corpse.
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
Exquisite Talent
During the time in the library we have been blessed with musical delights by some of the residents. It was beautiful to hear Darryl perform his exceptional Spanish guitar playing and Dave play his own composition called Wet Boat followed by awesome drumming. At one stage Lasu joined in with some true African drumming while Fiona added some vocals! Thanks for sharing your gifts with us!
WORMS by David Brown
As time grow closer,
The seconds make the most of the hour. Whether it was then or now, We all seem to get by somehow... Consider the now. What's happening man! You leave one place to take the Grand Stand. If it were not for humility, We would not have the ability, To relate on equal terms. As the world evolves, Lets not forget, The worms. |
Worms 2 by David Brown
'The Sky is Falling'
said the Chicken And the worms live below us, Strange to realise we'd be stuffed without worms. As I learn they have meaning in being As does everything in nature. What sets us apart from the worm? We were created-evolved into the image of creation, Yet we don't churn the soil and make it easy spoil for the things to grow above us. How mortal can we be, How far can we see without have worms in our life? Maybe at the end of the hook Or reading the book about the butcher with a worm knife, 'I'm going nowhere, I'm doing nothing, You can imagine my life'. |
A Change of Face or The Face of Change
Hilarious juxtapositions with old record covers. Can anyone guess who is behind these vinyl coated masks?
Photo-Based Projects - 2011
In Photo-Based Projects the learners enjoyed making a range of media from Stop-Still animations, concertinaed books to random photo shoots that they integrated into their other classes such as music and craft. We explored specific themes including HOME SWEET HOME and themes relevant to individuals and each presented as a moving media projection for the showcases. What was most inspiring is that the projects allowed the participants to experience empowerment as it provided an opportunity to voice their ideas, stories and opinions.
New Perspective
Participants wrote a story about an event where they had learnt an important lesson. They then converted the story into a short moral statement of advice from that life experience. The moral statment was written on a large piece of paper and were then photographed holding their statement in a specific location.
The idea was to print out the image and get someone to photograph them again holding the print in the same location matching up the edges of significant lines and structures to create a sense of the two images merging together to create one image in the location - a New Perspective! 2 Sides of the Coin
Participants had to photograph things that can be interpreted in both a positive and a negative way. As a group we showed each other the photos and discussed their alternative and complex meanings.

Home Sweet Home: What does 'home' mean to you.
For Adrian, home is having your own fridge with your own food in it.
For Fiona, home is about being able to use a broom to sweep away the dirty marks. For Jack, home is having your own bed where you can sleep and dream. |
Make Your Own Media
In Film - Making and Music Recording (or make your own media), projects have included a CD of original songs, short experimental films, and everything in between. It has been great collaborating with other programs, producing some "cross-platform" projects such as poetry and imagery, songwriting and recording, cooking and video
