Craft
Since the beginning of 2011 these classes have seen many projects where various skills and ideas have been encouraged, practised and realised.
We have seen many cushions, bags, aprons, heat bags, skirts and dresses each individually designed and made using pattern drafting, hand sewing, embroidery, machine sewing and applique techniques.
During the last 2 terms, the group has also been working on Teddy Bear making where each unique and individual bear has been lovingly hand stitched.
During this term we have worked on individual and group tasks where there has been many new skills learned, shared and developed – along with a few laughs, tears and revelations!
Our “FIX IT FESTA” has been a huge success in developing new skills to maintain clothing and ideas to recycle clothing
The tangible evidence of the Craft group is the completed craft projects however these creative outcomes represent only part of the journey …. The Craft Group has evolved into a wonderful space for the residents of CommonGround to not only be hands on creative space but a place to drop in, have a chat and engage as the projects are being constructed – we’ve even had family members come along!
This evolution has been a wonderful and an unexpected outcome.
Over this time I have also enjoyed seeing an increase of self esteem, confidence and friendships within the group.

Art
In the words of George Bernhard Shaw, "Art may not be the most important thing in life, but without it, the drabness of life would be unbearable." Over the first year of Common Ground a number of residents have ventured into the Art Room to express themselves artistically. Working with a variety of materials and techniques, learners have created a wide range of artworks inspired by their life experience. The culmination of the work lead to the graffiti mural in the courtyard of the art room.
